Walk into any hardware market and you'll find pipes at every price point — some genuinely ISI-marked, some carrying a look-alike mark that means nothing at all. For a product that's going to sit underground or inside your walls for decades, this is one shortcut that isn't worth taking. Here's what the ISI mark actually certifies, and how to make sure the pipe you're buying really has it.

What the ISI Mark Actually Means

The ISI mark is issued by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) and confirms that a pipe has been manufactured to a specific Indian Standard (IS code) — covering material composition, wall thickness, pressure rating and impact resistance. It isn't a self-declared label; a manufacturer has to go through:

• Product testing in BIS-recognised laboratories against the relevant IS specification.
• Factory inspection, where BIS officials verify manufacturing infrastructure and in-house quality control capability.
• Ongoing surveillance audits after the license is granted, including periodic sample testing to make sure quality doesn't slip after certification.

Only after clearing all of this does a manufacturer get a BIS license permitting use of the ISI mark on that specific product category.

The IS Codes That Actually Matter

Not all "PVC pipe" standards are the same — the right code depends on what the pipe is for:

When checking a pipe, don't just look for "an ISI mark" — check that the IS code printed matches the actual application. A drainage-grade pipe sold for pressure plumbing, or a plumbing-grade pipe sold as borewell casing, defeats the purpose even if a mark is present somewhere on it.

Where Counterfeit Pipes Cause the Most Damage

Unbranded or falsely marked pipes usually cut corners in ways you can't see at the point of purchase:

• Under-thickness walls that look similar in the shop but fail well before their rated pressure or collapse strength.
• Poor-quality or recycled PVC resin, reducing tensile strength and long-term durability.
• Inconsistent batch quality — one length performs fine, the next cracks, because there's no real quality control process behind it.

The real cost of this shows up later — a burst plumbing line inside a finished wall, or worse, a collapsed borewell casing pipe that means redrilling the entire well. The price difference between a genuine and a substandard pipe is almost always smaller than the cost of the failure it causes.

How to Check Before You Buy

A few quick checks protect you at the counter:

1. Look for the ISI mark plus the IS code printed clearly and repeatedly along the pipe length — not just once at the end.
2. Check the manufacturer's name / trademark, batch number, class and pressure rating are all printed together — genuine marking always comes as a full set, not a single logo.
3. Verify the licence on the BIS website if you want to confirm a manufacturer's license is active — genuine manufacturers have nothing to hide here.
4. Buy from an authorised dealer, not loose stock of unknown origin — established brands control their supply chain precisely so this doesn't happen.
5. Be wary of prices that seem too good relative to the standard market rate for that class of pipe — resin and processing costs don't allow for that kind of gap on a genuinely certified product.
