Yet most buyers choose one on looks alone, without checking the two factors that actually decide how long it lasts: steel grade and gauge thickness. Why Steel Grade Matters More Than Shine

Not all "stainless steel" is the same. The two grades commonly sold for domestic sinks in India are SS 304 and SS 202, and the difference comes down to nickel content.

SS 304 is often called "18/8" steel, referring to its chromium-nickel ratio, and is the grade generally recommended for kitchens because of consistent long-term performance. SS 202 is a legitimate, lower-cost grade — it isn't "fake steel" — but it performs best in lighter-use settings and is more sensitive to prolonged moisture and harsh cleaning agents.

A word of caution: because 304 and 202 sheets look identical to the eye, grade claims on unbranded or marketplace listings can't be verified without certification. This is exactly where BIS certification becomes useful for a buyer.

Grade vs Gauge: Two Different Things

Buyers often assume a thicker sink automatically means better steel — that's a separate property.

  • Grade describes the alloy composition, which determines corrosion resistance.
  • Gauge describes the physical thickness of the steel sheet, which determines dent resistance and how much sound the sink makes during use.

A thick SS 202 sink is still more rust-prone than a thinner SS 304 sink; the two properties need to be checked independently. For domestic kitchen sinks, a 16–18 gauge sheet (roughly 1.2–1.5 mm thickness) is generally considered a good balance of durability and noise dampening.

The BIS Standard: IS 13983

Stainless steel sinks for domestic use are covered under IS 13983:1994, issued by the Bureau of Indian Standards under its Sanitary Appliances and Water Fittings division. The standard specifies material, construction, dimensions, and workmanship requirements for sit-on and inset type sinks, including options for tap holes and overflow provisions.

Under the applicable Quality Control Order, ISI certification against IS 13983 is now mandatory for stainless steel sinks sold in the Indian market. Certification testing covers:

  • Corrosion resistance
  • Structural strength and load-bearing capacity
  • Surface finish
  • Drainage efficiency
  • Dimensional accuracy

For a buyer, the practical takeaway is simple: look for the ISI mark on the product, and don't hesitate to ask a manufacturer for their BIS licence details before purchase — particularly for online listings where grade claims can't be physically verified.

Types of Sinks to Choose From

  • Sit-on / inset sinks — sit on top of the counter cutout, the most common and easiest to install or replace.
  • Single bowl — suited to compact kitchens or where a large single basin is preferred for bigger utensils.
  • Double bowl — allows separation of washing and rinsing, useful for higher daily kitchen load.

Installation and Maintenance Tips

  • Ensure the cutout matches the sink's rated dimensions exactly to avoid leakage at the counter joint.
  • Use a neutral-pH cleaner for daily maintenance; avoid prolonged exposure to bleach or strongly acidic cleaning agents, which can dull even SS 304 surfaces over time.
  • Wipe the sink dry after use in humid weather to reduce water-spotting and mineral deposits from hard water.
  • Check tap-hole and drain-hole alignment against your fitting sizes before installation to avoid rework.
