uPVC vs CPVC: Which Pipe Should You Use Where?

Walk into any plumbing store and you'll see two families of white-ish pipes that look nearly identical. Yet using the wrong one can mean deformed pipes, leaking joints and expensive rework. Here's the difference in plain language.

The one-line answer

  • uPVC = cold water and drainage.
  • CPVC = hot and cold water.

What actually differs

Temperature tolerance

uPVC is rated for water up to about 60°C, but it softens as temperatures climb, so it's best kept on cold-water duty. CPVC is chlorinated during manufacturing, which raises its heat tolerance to around 93°C — comfortably handling geyser and solar heater output.

Pressure behaviour

Both handle typical domestic pressures well. For high-rise buildings and pump-fed lines, check the SDR/class rating printed on the pipe rather than assuming.

Cost

uPVC is more economical. Using CPVC everywhere "to be safe" inflates your material cost by 30–50% with no benefit on cold lines.

Safety

Both BAISHALII uPVC (Superflow) and CPVC (PowerGuard) ranges are lead-free, so drinking water stays safe either way.

Three mistakes to avoid

  1. Connecting a geyser outlet to uPVC. The first hot bath will begin deforming the joint. Always use CPVC downstream of any water heater.
  2. Mixing solvent cements. uPVC and CPVC use different solvent cements — using the wrong one gives a joint that looks fine and fails months later.
  3. Skipping the transition fitting. Where the two systems meet, use a proper uPVC-to-CPVC transition rather than force-fitting.

Bottom line

Map your hot-water paths first — everything a geyser or solar heater touches gets CPVC; everything else runs happily and economically on uPVC. Browse the BAISHALII Superflow (uPVC) and PowerGuard (CPVC) catalogues for the complete SKU range with sizes and codes, or send us an enquiry and we'll help you plan the layout.
